Elfman: The Unknown Known

This unique event features a live, full-orchestra performance of a selection from the score of the 2013 documentary The Unknown Known, conducted by Oscar-nominated film composer David Newman. The Symposium also includes a panel discussion led by Jon Burlingame, with orchestrator Steve Bartek and sound engineer Dennis Sands, both of whom have worked closely with Danny Elfman for decades.

Join Symposium panelists, conductors, and fellow film music enthusiasts for a delightful dinner to benefit AYS. Enjoy this sumptuous and scintillating gathering as the perfect segue into the evening’s entertainment.

For the third and final year of our crowd-favorite Elfman Project, AYS fuses music and story telling with selections from some of Elfman’s most brilliantly imaginative and iconic scores. Suites are in-part performed to film and conducted by AYS alumnus and world-renowned film composer David Newman. This resplendent event also features two of Aaron Copland’s most evocative and beloved works.

Honoring the legacy of AYS’ landmark training, distinguished alumnus Michael Sachs, principal trumpet of the Cleveland Orchestra, performs Eino Tamberg’s strikingly colorful Concerto for Trumpet No. 1. Feel Royce Hall resonate with the vibrations of Saint-Saëns’ majestic Organ Symphony, the crowning glory of the prodigious composer’s career.

Returning by popular demand, world-touring power-house Valentina Lisitsa makes her Walt Disney Concert Hall debut playing Rachmaninoff’s career-defining Piano Concerto No. 2. Lisitsa, a dazzling star of the Internet age, is known internationally for her daring YouTube performances that capture millions of hearts to this day. Maverick composer Paul Dooley premieres a specially commissioned piece in honor of our 50th Anniversary Season.
