(October 2019, Los Angeles, CA) The American Youth Symphony’s (AYS) annual Hollywood Project concert, to be held on November 23 at UCLA’s Royce Hall, will honor composer James Horner and feature his score for Ron Howard’s Apollo 13. AYS Music Director, Carlos Izcaray will conduct the symphony in a live-to-picture performance of Horner’s entire Oscar®-nominated score. Tickets are $18, free for members, and can be reserved at aysymphonyorg.dream.press/tickets.

Started by AYS Board Member composer David Newman, this season’s Hollywood Project concert, Apollo 13 in Concert, will be the twelfth that AYS has produced. The Hollywood Project concerts have been widely praised for showcasing the technical prowess and musical maturity of the AYS orchestra, with Justin Craig of Film Score Monthly writing: “The American Youth Symphony stands high, mastering the challenge of performing film music with all its unconventional meters and rhythms. Don’t be deceived by the label of ‘youth’ orchestra; the AYS is the real deal.” Past concerts have featured works of several luminaries in the film industry including John Williams, Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith, Michael Giacchino, and Alan Silvestri.

Hailed by critics and audiences alike, Universal Pictures’ Apollo 13 tells the incredible story of one of the most thrilling and suspenseful missions in the history of the American space program. Directed by Ron Howard and nominated for nine Academy Awards®, the film stars Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton as astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise, who were selected to fly NASA’s third moon landing mission.

Having composed music for more than 130 film and television productions, James Horner was among the world’s most prolific and beloved film composers. He earned two Academy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards, eight additional Academy Award nominations, five additional Golden Globe nominations, and won six Grammy awards. Known for his stylistic diversity, his other film credits include Titanic, Avatar, A Beautiful Mind, and Braveheart just to name a few. Following Apollo 13 in Concert there will be an Apollo 13 themed dinner honoring the life and work of Horner, to be accepted on his behalf by his wife, Sara Horner. Dinner begins at 7:00 pm and reservations start at $450. Proceeds support the American Youth Symphony, a 501c3 nonprofit organization.

James Horner
James Horner was among the world’s most prolific and beloved film composers, having scored more than 130 movies including Titanic, Braveheart, Avatar, A Beautiful Mind, Glory, Apollo 13, The Perfect Storm, Aliens, Legends of the Fall, Field of Dreams, The Mask of Zorro, An American Tail, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Willow, The Rocketeer, Apocalypto, Cocoon, Gorky Park, and Star Treks II and III. He earned two Academy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards and six Grammy Awards, with eight additional Academy Award nominations and five additional Golden Globe nominations. Born in Los Angeles in 1953, Horner spent his formative years in London where he studied at the Royal College of Music. He continued his education at USC and later earned a Doctorate in Music Composition and Theory from UCLA. As a film composer, he likened his approach to that of a painter, where the film serves as the canvas and musical color is used to describe and support the picture’s emotional dynamics. Tragically, Horner died in 2015 when the single-engine aircraft he was piloting crashed in a remote area of northern Ventura County. He left behind a legacy of some of the most influential and acclaimed music in the history of cinema.
