Mission Statement
The String Project is committed to improving music education in Los Angeles by providing children with the opportunity to understand the joys of creating, performing, and experiencing music.
Philosophy
The String Project provides an after school violin program for third, fourth, and fifth graders in schools in Los Angeles Unified School District. AYS String Project believes that every child regardless of the neighborhood where they were born or socioeconomic status of their families deserves a music education. We offer students the option of trying something new and different; we give students a chance to play the violin. We attempt to nurture each student and create a space where students feel free to experience music.
Each child involved in the String Project is given the opportunity to develop a voice through music which is uniquely their own. We have seen that music learning presents students with many unique challenges. When students find ways to overcome obstacles to learning music, it not only makes children better musicians, but it allows them to develop “life” skills that they can carry with them throughout their lives.
Many public school students are left feeling limited by the structure of school and are given no alternatives. The String Project allows children to be individuals and find ways to express their ideas by making music. They are asked to work hard, focus, refine, and revise their own ideas. They collaborate and perform with their peers in ensembles to learn to work with others. The culmination of their experience results in a performance where they celebrate their musical progress with their families, friends and community. We hope the student’s musical experiences with The String Project will light a fuse of possibility and hopefully create a place where urban youth can dream and envision the world they desire. |
